Importance of Flatness
Appropriate flatness is a must for any industrial floor as a suitable surface is crucial for the smooth functioning of materials handling equipment (MHE). The building as a whole, with all its static equipment and MHE, can function satisfactorily, only with optimum levelness.
Levelness and Flatness
MHE is classified into two distinct areas of traffic movement in warehouses i.e., Free Movement and Defined Movement.
Free Movement Area
Free Movement Surveys are performed on areas where MHE traffic moves randomly in variable directions such as wide aisle areas, block-stacking, or aisle transfers. It is not possible to survey an infinite number of points when assessing surface regularity in FM areas. Hence, on a three-meter grid, a representative sample of the floor is surveyed.
Defined Movement Area
The MHE run on defined movement floors and fixed pathways between the racking on floors in very narrow aisle racking systems. Face Profileographs of slightly different configurations are used to measure the floors here. Safe and efficient operation of a narrow aisle forklift truck can be ensured only with a high standard of floor flatness.
